Hedera is a public distributed ledger with the ultimate goal of reaching full decentralisation. To secure the network Hedera combines a path to permissionless, also called network nodes, and a path to widespread coin distribution. Hedera's innovation is the use of hashgraph technology.
The company Swirlds holds the patents and Hashgraph licence. A governing council of different companies own and manage Hedera.
Leemon Baird and Mance Harmon created Hashgraph and founded Hedera.
While Ethereum was the first crypto project that introduced potential and scalable use cases to use blockchain technology through its smart-contracts, Hedera brings a new approach on the table with its Hashgraph, which culd potentially be the future of blockchain.
